STEMcx Interns at BlueVoyant, Other Enterprises, Hope To Change the Face of STEM
August 4, 2022
BALTIMORE, August 4, 2022 – Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are often lucrative and in high demand; however, African American workers make up only 9% of the STEM workforce in the U.S. Worse yet, there has been no change in their share of STEM jobs since 2016. Pipeline building programs like this one, created by STEMcx and its partners, are hoping to change that. STEMcx is the education arm of nonprofit Transforming Lives Community Development Corporation (TLCDC), and is dedicated to exposing students from underrepresented areas to STEM fields.
On Saturday, August 13 from 12:00-3:00 p.m. ET at the New Psalmist Baptist Church (6020 Marian Drive, Baltimore, Maryland 21215) 21 Baltimore-area high school students will display computer coding projects and research poster presentations as a culmination to three summer internships hosted by STEMcx and its partners. The students will also receive stipends for their work over the summer. Topic areas include computer coding, environmental justice, and bioethics. The sponsors of the internships — BlueVoyant, BGE and Kaiser Permanente, realize that investing in these talented students is the best way to assure a more diverse STEM workforce in the future. Mayor Brandon Scott as well as representatives from U.S. Senator Ben Cardin’s and U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen’s offices will be on hand to congratulate the students.
“Companies always talk about the problem, but it’s time to put programs in place to solve the problem,” said Eric Parker, director of risk operations at BlueVoyant and STEMcx partner. BlueVoyant, an industry-leading cyber defense company converging internal and external security is sponsoring the computer coding internship for the second summer in a row.
Internships offering minorities first-hand experience in STEM fields and valuable networking opportunities will help to diversify the STEM workforce. TLCDC and STEMcx are proud to be a part of that change.
The guest list for the event is limited. To attend, please contact [email protected].
